SCS Return To School Plans 2020-2021

Arrival/Departure

  • Buses will be met upon arrival.  Students will enter the building through their designated door, apply hand sanitizer and proceed to their classroom. Students in grades 4-8 will need to have their mask on before entering the school.  
  • Buses are set to arrive at the school between 8:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. with the school day beginning at 8:45 a.m.  
  • Students who do not arrive via bus should enter the school at the front door. Students in grades 4-8 will need to have their mask on before entering the school. Please ring the bell and Mrs. Pollard will greet you with further instructions.
  • Students will get ready and wait in their classrooms at the 3:15 p.m. dismissal time.  Students will be called by bus group and supervised as they exit the building and get onto the bus.  Students must wear their masks while getting ready in the hallway and as they proceed out of the school and onto the bus.  
  • Parents picking up students should ring the bell at the front door. Mrs. Pollard will assist with student sign-out. Parents will be asked to wait outside. 
  • If your child is going to be picked up, whether early or not, please call the school with the time and your child will be ready for pick up at the main entrance.  Please ring the bell to let Mrs. Pollard know that you have arrived. 
  • Please follow social distancing protocol while waiting for your children.
  • Please send only one family member to drop off or pick up your child(ren).  
  • At this time, visitors to the school will be limited to essential workers, and do not include parents/guardians.  
  • Parents/guardians are considered essential when there is an urgent need/emergency.  If parents/guardians enter the school for an essential reason, they must wear a mask.

Lunch/Recess

  • Students will eat in their homeroom.
  • The grade 5/6, 7/8, and 3/4 classes will eat first and go outside second for both breaks.  Eating will be 20 minutes and outside will be 25 minutes.
  • The grade 1/2, 2/3, and Kindergarten classes will go outside first and eat second for both breaks. Outside will be 25 minutes and eating will be 20 minutes.
  • Student belongings will be stored in the hallways one metre apart for grades 1/2 to 7/8.  Kindergarten students will get ready in two staggered groups.
  • Students will line up 1 metre apart and be accompanied by the supervisor out the appropriate door to their playground zone.  Students will sanitize prior to leaving the building for recess and before entering the building at the end of recess.  
  • 3 zones will be established and assigned for recess.  These zones may be rotated throughout the year.
  • Students will use the following doors:
    • Grade 5/6 - enter and exit through southwest door
    • Grade 7/8 - enter and exit through northwest door
    • Grade 2/3 - enter and exit through northwest door
    • Grade 3/4 - enter and exit through the northeast door.
    • Grade 1/2 - enter and exit through the northeast door
    • Kindergarten - enter and exit through their own dedicated door. 

Bathrooms

  • Bathrooms - Only the 5/6 and 7/8 classes will use the bathroom in the west half.
  • Kindergarten has their own bathroom.
  • The 1/2, 2/3, and 3/4 classes will use the bathroom in the east hall.  
  • Signage will be displayed indicating the number of students allowed in the bathroom at one time.  
  • Students will have to check prior to entering the bathroom.

School Supplies

The school will provide all supplies needed to complete school work.

Please send your child with a pair of shoes for indoor use, appropriate outerwear for the weather and lunch. 

We are working to limit the clutter in classrooms and hallways to support social distancing and ease of travel within the school and appreciate your support in sending only what is necessary with your child.

Office - Essential visitors and students will go to the barrier to speak to Mrs. Pollard.  

Lining up - Students will be taught to maintain a minimum of 1 metre distance.  

Breakfast program and Hot Lunch - We will not be running either program until further notice.

Lunch - Microwaves will NOT be available for student use.  Please send containers that your child can open independently.  

Water fountains/refillable stations - Students can use the refillable stations, but the water fountains will not be used.  All students will be provided with a personalized water bottle.  These may not arrive in time for the first day, so please send your child with a water bottle until we can distribute the personalized bottles.  

School Council - We will have a School Council with meetings being held via video or phone conferencing.

Communication - If you have a question or concern, please contact the school and a phone meeting will be set up with the appropriate staff members.  

Hand Hygiene - There will be regular hand washing/sanitizing at strategic times throughout the day which include, but are not limited to, arrival, departure, recess, and lunch.  

Distancing - Students will be taught, and will practice, how to maintain the appropriate distance from each other.  Children will have a designated spot in the hallway to keep their belongings with one metre in between students.  

Routines and Procedures - There will be an emphasis on teaching and following appropriate routines and procedures related to COVID-19 safety.  We are all in this together!

Signage - There will be signage throughout the building to support appropriate procedures (e.g. room capacity, traffic direction).

Masks - Please send your child with a mask.  Masks must be worn by all students in grades 4-8.  Grade 3 students in the Grade 3/4 class MUST wear masks.  It is recommended that students in grades K-3 wear masks; however, staff will be unable to assist in the adjustments of masks if students find them challenging to wear or keep on.  We will have masks on hand in case someone forgets or loses their mask.  It is recommended that masks are washed each night.  Masks must be worn on the way to the playground, but can be removed during recess as long as students maintain a 2 metre distance from other classmates/staff.  Student masks must be stored in a provided brown paper bag or ziploc when removed for recess or lunch.  Please practice mask wearing with your children.  Staff will be wearing appropriate personal protective equipment both inside and outside when interacting with children.  We will incorporate as many mask breaks, following policy, as possible.

Communication - Staff will communicate with parents via SeeSaw, Google Classroom or Edsby.  Agendas will not be used at this time.

Staggered Entry

ONLY students in Grades K - 2/3 will attend on Thursday, September 3, 2020.

ONLY students in Grades 3/4 - 7/8 will attend on Friday, September 4, 2020.

ALL students resume regular attendance starting on Tuesday, September 8, 2020.
